Preveli Back to Travel Guide

Preveli is not just a beach. It is an autonomous ecosystem of rare wild beauty. For some, it is a true paradise on earth.

Preveli beach is formed at the exit of the daunting Kourtaliotis Gorge. The gorge is crossed by Megas Potamos (Great River), which "feeds" the entire ecosystem. Before it pours to the sea, the river gives shape to a large lake. At the same time, on the riverside there is a native colony of the famous Theofrastos' Palm Trees, which gives the whole area a tropical character. The colony was destroyed to a large degree by a fire in 2008, however, in just a few months, Theofrastos' Palm Trees "returned" to life for reasons unknown.

It is worth walking along the river, under the shadow of the trees, to enjoy this real natural monument. The most adventurous out there can climb up the gorge. If you make that attempt, make sure that you have the necessary supplies and equipment. You can also rent a pedalo for a river trip.

The beach is sandy with crystal waters and pebble seabed, whereas the waters are quite cold due to the river. It is poorly organized, without umbrellas. Maybe, that's why it used to be one of the favorite destinations for hippies.

To reach Preveli park your car in the designated area and walk downhill.
